When people talk about chip implants being "the size of a grain of rice," they're referring to a type of implant that we call x-series. These come sterilized and preloaded in an injector with a lubricated needle. Their small size requires they have a solenoid style antenna which requires particular orientation (perpendicular) relative to the reader's traces (assuming it's a typical, flat antenna and not another solenoid). This is often done in a swiping motion across a reader.
Flex implants are larger and feature an antenna geometry similar that found in typical readers. This means that they tend to couple easier providing better range and ease of use. These are not installed with an injector and come in a variety of formats which dictate the installation method. Narrow flexes, such as the Apex Flex or flexUG4, can be installed with the help of our custom 4g piercing needle and are placed by hand in the resulting pocket. Wide and disc formats require an advanced installation.
